Behind the fluff...
Originating as a couple of drawings at the end of my confused and introverted teenage years, Cloudboy has evolved into a multi decade whim-project that is as absurd as it is complex.
On the surface he is a crackpot whimsical construction from junk and foam, a sporadically reinvented folly paralleling my emerging creative life, the culmination of a comment ("we need space suits") in a junkyard by two friends on finding some concertina ducting tube .
Metaphorically he is the transcendent reality of my relationship to art and life, an idealised image of masculinity and self-preservation, a symbol of myself in all my fallible ridiculous humanity bedecked in a cosmonaut suit that reflects the vicissitudes and serendipity of a life creatively lived. I am literally carrying the burden of my creative habit on my shoulders... all 27 kilograms.
It's also really awesome to own a space suit
The idea that he should step out of the studio and onto the streets of Melbourne was as whimsical as the first inspiration that made him... hmmm I wonder what it would look like if I got on a train early in the morning and commuted into the city? It should not be taken lightly, but it should be taken. One small step for Cloudboy could be one giant tangent for mankind (well me), and if nothing else it creates a welcome respite to the drab quotidian nature of most peoples busy morning commute, and that is fun and should be done.
The original Cloudboy drawing dating from somewhere in the late 80's, I was still painfully teenage yet a burgeoning adult trying to be cool and something other than my awkward self. I remember taking pains to make the whole thing look like it could really work from mapping the joints over a sketch of a proportionally correct human to arcs of movement and means of moving the limbs.
I built the first version of my spacesuit in 2001 (I actually built two, the other disappeared mysteriously), both were hugely cumbersome, mine the orange one being called Sun, the other built for my mate was blue and called Moon. They made a brief appearance at the solar Eclipse at Lyndhurst in 2002.
Probably the most regular appearance of Cloudboy was at Rainbow Serpent Festival. Being an early riser and it being cooler then I would don Cloudboy and trek the kilometre to the market and buy coffee for my wife and I. Extra fun being had when all communication was via a selection of whistles and horns in the helmet.
